Insurance Risk and Margins just in time for Summer

Outsourced CFO Support that grows your cash and your confidence

Hi Reader,

Today, I hosted a little learning and networking session with my insurance broker and colleague, Cory Fischer. Cory's been my agent for at least 4 years and has reviewed many of my clients policies.

Here are a few of highlights from that call that I found most insightful as a CFO helping clients and as a business owner navigating business insurance:

  • The agent you have matters the most! don't get multiple agents working against each other.
  • Your agent can help you decide to submit a claim or self pay, you don't have to hold back from asking the questions.
  • Cyber and AI are a little funky right now and that's something all businesses should review
  • Your coverage is a lot more about your (you the owner or you the board or you the shareholders) risk tolerance and what you're looking for
  • Pricing is Revenue risk x Type of business risk = Cost
    • The more revenue you generate the more your policy will go up; the riskier your business is the more your policy will go up (think baby products vs mens underwear, one has a lot more risk of lawsuit that the other).
  • Cory is capable of both sports and real estate analogies depending on who's in the room. Thanks Cory!
  • If you want to get in touch with Cory, you can find him on LinkedIn or shoot me an email and I'll make an intro.

๐Ÿ’ค Quality Sleep and ๐Ÿ’ธ Quality Margins Check-in!

I announced in December my theme for 2026: Sleep + Margins.

To keep in front and center, I'm making it an entire section of the newsletter. Thanks for following along!

SLEEP:

What happens when you reach a plateau?

Plateau's in business happen all the time, it's no different with sleep. I've done what I can do, now I'm waiting for the cutest 18 month old on the planet to need a little less of me at night.

I was thinking about writing this and felt like I need to have something juicy but then there are just times there's no update.

Welcome to my "no-update" update.

MARGINS:

Margins are here!!

It can be hard to gage the impact of a finance team because we're only one small portion of the whole and at the end of the day, my job is to provide insights and strategic advice. It's on the business owner themselves to implement the changes necessary.

With that said and a large drum roll, here's some stats from our client financial data:

On average, clients that work with us 12 months or longer are seeing:

  • 464% increase in revenue
  • 320% increase in net income $
  • 199% increase in net profit margin
  • 147% decrease in expenses as a % of revenue (which is more $$ to invest in future growth or pay owners)

To be real, we are working with a current client whose stats have dropped beyond our control of what my team and I can provide. This data comes with a lot of footnotes to who did what and when and how. Finance is not an operating team, it's an insights team. Much of real work has to be done by everyone else on those teams.

Even still. I'm so proud, not only has our work paid for itself, it's gone above and beyond.

Now my real dream is start tracking owner compensation quarter over quarter and see what happens there.

Finance Fight Club

Finance is not rocket scienceSadly, itโ€™s become this mysterious field for small business owners like yourself. And it keeps owners in the dark from making their best choices for their businesses. My love for finance started when that light bulb turned on. Finance is not bookkeeping or taxes. Finance is making good decisions, which requires good financial analysis and controls. You cannot be strategic in your business without first understanding your numbers.Thatโ€™s when I decided to bring my CFO-type skills to small businesses. To help owners become leaders, by integrating numbers into their daily choices and busting the mythโ€”that finance is rocket science. it isnโ€™t. Ready to make choices based on data, not hunch? Ready to feel in control of your business? Ready to grow revenues & increase profits? With confidence?

Outsourced CFO Support that grows your cash and your confidence Hi Reader, FUN FACT: a fractional CFO helps with debt financing more than you may think. Just in the past week and half, I've talked to at least 5 different bankers for at least 3 different clients. Here's what I accomplished for them: Clarity on next steps to increase a credit limit and open a line of credit where the client didn't understand what to ask and what to say (3 minute conversation between me and the banker) Screened...

Fight for your financial future for your small business Hi Reader, Fun Fact: Ground Hog Day data shows that predicting the weather based on a rodent is LESS accurate than making a random guess... so don't always trust what you hear. I owe a HUGE shoutout on a pretty incredible partner: A few months ago, one of my long-time clients was going through due diligence on a sale (in closed- wohooo!) and right before the final decision the client received a MASSIVE (~$432K) tax bill from the state of...

Fight for your financial future for your small business Hi Reader, ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป This is my anthem for 2026 Quality Sleep and Quality Margins I announced in December my theme for 2026: Sleep + Margins. This year I'm going let you follow along in my journey. SLEEP: Sleep is elusive right now with 3 kids and one under 2, but we're getting there. The big thing I'm focused on for January is not caring about the HOW. The only goal is to sleep. If I sleep in the couch because I need to - totally fine. If I...
